Wings Cultural Society in collaboration with Purani Dilli Walo Ki Baatein is presenting TOPI KI DASTAAN on Sunday, 25th March 2018. Topi Shukla ki Dastaan has been adapted by Director Tarique Hameed for the stage production.

Purani Dilli Walo Ki Baatein, the organizers is a group working towards the preservation and maintaining of the rich Ganga – Jamuni Tehzeeb and culture of old Delhi. It began it’s journey from a startup of a small Facebook page to an organization now fervently involved in conducting walks, organizing events, bringing the culinary delights of the city and invigorating discourses and narratives about the lifestyles, history, and cultures of the original inhabitants of old Delhi.

Wings Cultural Society has been conceived with the idea of raising consciousness about social issues through the medium of theater and cultural activities. The group debuted with a performance of a theater – ‘Jesi Karni Vesi Bharni’ at the 21st Urdu Drama Festival held in 2010 in Sri Ram Center, New Delhi. The group has widely participated in theater Olympic, many literature festivals, Bharat Rang Mahotsav, many Natya Utsavs including Bhartendu and IPTA Rangutsav. The group has performed at Jashn-e-rekhta an upcoming festival celebrating Urdu and at the famous Zohra Sehgal festival of the arts.

Tarique Hameed the director of this dastaan has directed several other plays as well. The group continues to perform at various levels and platforms across the country. Topi Ki Dastaan is a team effort of six talented theatre artists which is unique in its own way.

Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza needs no formal introduction. He began his journey from a small town of Ghazipur in Eastern U.P where he was born to becoming one of the favorite story tellers of Bollywood cinema. Raza sahabs writings are all about the emotions of love and hate and camaraderie of inter-faith beliefs.

In continuous efforts to showcase and tell the importance of preserving our heritage and architecture, Purani Dilli Walo Ki Baatein is organizing Topi Ki Dastaan in the compounds of the famous Anglo Arabic school near Ajmeri Gate, Old Delhi. The school was founded in 1696 by Ghaziuddin Khan Firoz Jung, who was the General of Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb. It was originally a madarsa named after him. After the weakening of the Mughal empire, the madarsa came to the verge of getting closed in 1790’s. However, it was rechristened as Anglo Arabic college by the British East India Company in 1828.

The idea of the college then was to uplift the Indians through an infusion of English language and literature into the academics. The famous anecdote which we get reminded of while narrating the history of this college is that of Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib. He was the famous Urdu and Persian poet in the court of the last ruling Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zaffar. He was offered the principalship of this college but he refused the prestigious offer which could have then immensely helped him financially only because he was not greeted by anybody from the institution while getting down from his palanquin at the doorstep of the college.

TOPI KI DASTAAN or TOPI SHUKLA as famously known is a story about the tumultuous relationship between two Hindu Muslim friends, namely Topi and Iffan. The Dastaan is about these two childhood friends who grew up in a multicultural, homogenous environment before the political partition and creation of India and Pakistan as two different Nations made out of one. The Dastaan infuses true emotions and feelings of these two friends representing their religion, cultural identities, and political inclinations.

It also reflects the conflicting mindsets of other common people who experienced this great division. It indicates the fears, love and many more emotions that still bombard our minds here and across our border.
