White Nights/Rajat Ratein

The play
“White Nights” is a dramatic adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s
story “White Nighst: A Sentimental Love Story”. The narrative explores the desperation,
fragility and unreality of isolation reproduced within the intensive space of the
cityscape where a man, (the dreamer) meets a stranger, a woman from Bangaladesh,
(Nastenka/ Nasrin) with whom over a period of four nights he shares his life and
his dreams. The play also unfolds the story of Nastenka who has left her home in
search of her love and has come to Delhi to find him. The play dramatises the nature
of the profound bonding that develops between the dreamer and Nastenka over these
four nights. The play with its installation lighting and fragmented spatial organisation
through sets and use of projection has tried to give a theatrical representation
to this idea of a not so clearly defined reality where things unfold with real affects,
like two people coming together but for obscure reasons which cannot be categorised
as ‘sheer’ love or ‘mere’ friendship.
